Local residents catch and slaughter whales near the town of Hvalvik. More than 180 pilot whales (globicephala melaena) were killed in the small town during traditional whale hunting near the Faroe Islands.
Taraf: A joint report prepared by the European Commission and the Turkish Prime Ministry has revealed that bribing officials employed at local administrations, real estate registration offices and traffic offices has almost become a tradition in Turkey, the daily announced in its main story yesterday. According to research conducted across 43 provinces, a bribe is generally seen as a “gift” and 50 percent of respondents said they tend to bribe officials at traffic offices while 80 percent of officials employed at these offices tend to accept bribes offered by people. Due to the intense workload at real estate registration offices, people tend to bribe employers there to speed up their procedures, the daily said.

Sabah: “With more time, problem will grow,” read the headline of a front-page story in the daily yesterday, quoting remarks from President Abdullah Gül, who said steps should be taken urgently for a peaceful solution to Turkey's Kurdish problem before it is allowed to grow bigger. “Regardless of whether it is called the terrorism problem or the Kurdish problem, we will sort this problem out. The more time that passes before a solution is found, the bigger this problem will get; it will inevitably become more complicated,” Gül said on Wednesday, the second day of his visit to Kyrgyzstan.

Akşam: “Kurdish lesson from northern Iraqis,” read the headline of the daily's lead story yesterday, which reported that Artuklu University, located in the southern province of Mardin, had reached an agreement with two academics from northern Iraq on who will teach Kurdish and Arabic at the university. This is the academic Kurdish initiative. Artuklu University is cooperating with Dukok and Kirkuk universities in northern Iraq to teach Kurdish and Arabic at the university. Their cooperation also includes a student exchange program, with 25 students from Artuklu University going to northern Iraq to study Kurdish for three months.
